The small County Clare town of Larinch is located on Liscannor Bay and today is a seaside resort and Golf Course. However, in the 19th century it had a racecourse which was, in many ways, ahead of its time. In 1839 it launched a new course on Wednesday 28th August and promised racing one day per week throughout the season. Entries had to be made at the Larinch Hotel and at the time of making their entries owners had to announce the colours their riders were to wear. Entry fees were charged and 5% of each person’s entry fee was added to prize money. Part of the Golf Course now covers the old racecourse. At the two day meeting on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th September 1844 a steeplechase was run over 1 ½ miles with 6 leaps. The course was owned by Captain Andrew Stackpole, with Mr J H Coatsworth acting as Clerk of the Course. Racing lapsed for a number of years before returning to the Lachtovoneen course in August 1888. The final 2 day meeting took place on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th September 1889. |
